What is Gastric Banding?

Gastric banding places an adjustable silicone band laparoscopically around the upper stomach, creating a small pouch that restricts food intake. The band connects to a subcutaneous port, allowing tightness to be adjusted at outpatient visits by adding or removing saline. Dr. Tagore Mohan Grandhi performs laparoscopic gastric banding. The procedure preserves normal stomach anatomy and is fully reversible, an important consideration for patients who may require future abdominal surgery.

Suitable for patients who prefer a reversible, adjustable weight loss approach, or who are not candidates for more extensive bariatric surgery following multidisciplinary assessment.

How the Procedure Works

1

Pre-operative Evaluation

BMI, comorbidity profile, and dietary habits assessed. Nutritional counselling completed.

2

Laparoscopic Access

Five small incisions placed. Full visualisation of the gastro-oesophageal junction achieved.

3

Band Placement

Adjustable silicone band positioned around the upper stomach near the gastro-oesophageal junction under direct vision.

4

Port Fixation

Band tubing tunnelled subcutaneously and connected to an access port fixed to the anterior rectus sheath.

5

Adjustment Programme

Band progressively tightened over the first year via saline injections at outpatient clinic to achieve optimal restriction.
