Gastric Balloon
Temporary endoscopic balloon in the stomach — no surgery, no incisions, same-day procedure, 6-month duration.
What is Gastric Balloon?
The intragastric balloon is a non-surgical weight loss procedure. A soft silicone balloon is inserted endoscopically and inflated with saline, occupying stomach space to induce early satiety and reduce meal portions, supporting weight loss without any surgical incision. Dr. Tagore Mohan Grandhi offers the gastric balloon as a standalone non-surgical intervention or as a bridge to bariatric surgery. The balloon is removed endoscopically at 6 months.
How the Procedure Works
Pre-procedure Assessment
Upper GI endoscopy examines the stomach. Exclusions including large hiatus hernia or previous gastric surgery are confirmed.
IV Sedation
Sedation administered for patient comfort. General anaesthesia is not required.
Balloon Insertion
Deflated silicone balloon passed through the oesophagus using an endoscope under direct vision.
Balloon Inflation
Balloon filled with 400–700 ml saline solution, sized to occupy stomach space and induce early satiety.
Removal at 6 Months
Balloon deflated endoscopically and removed via the mouth. Continued weight management and dietary counselling planned.
Outcomes
Who Needs This Treatment?
- →No surgery, no incisions, no general anaesthesia — fully endoscopic
- →No admission required — day procedure under sedation
- →Suitable bridge to bariatric surgery for higher-risk patients
- →Same-day procedure with immediate return to normal activity
- →Fully reversible — removed at 6 months with no lasting anatomical change
The gastric balloon is an excellent starting point for patients wanting meaningful weight loss without surgery — particularly those preparing for a larger bariatric procedure.
