What is Sleeve Gastrectomy?

Sleeve gastrectomy is the most widely performed bariatric procedure worldwide. Approximately 80% of the stomach is removed laparoscopically, creating a narrow sleeve. This dramatically reduces food intake and lowers levels of ghrelin, the hunger hormone, producing sustained weight loss and improvement in obesity-related conditions. Dr. Tagore Mohan Grandhi performs sleeve gastrectomy through 5 small keyhole incisions, drawing on international bariatric fellowship training. All cases are individually planned to achieve the best possible long-term metabolic outcomes.

Suitable for patients with BMI 40+, or BMI 35+ with Type 2 Diabetes who have failed sustained weight loss through diet and exercise.

How the Procedure Works

1

Pre-operative Assessment

BMI, blood tests, endoscopy, and psychological counselling confirm suitability and readiness for surgery.

2

Laparoscopic Access

Five small incisions (5–12 mm) placed. Camera and instruments inserted; stomach visualised under full magnification.

3

Gastric Sleeve Creation

80% of the stomach resected along a bougie using a laparoscopic linear stapler, creating a narrow tubular sleeve.

4

Staple Line Reinforcement & Leak Test

Staple line reinforced and tested intraoperatively with methylene blue or air under insufflation to confirm integrity.

5

Post-operative Programme

Liquid diet commenced on day one. Protein supplementation and 3-monthly metabolic review with weight and ghrelin monitoring.
