Mini Gastric Bypass
Single-anastomosis bypass combining restriction and malabsorption — simpler than Roux-en-Y with comparable outcomes.
What is Mini Gastric Bypass?
The Mini Gastric Bypass (MGB) creates a long, narrow gastric pouch connected to the small bowel through a single anastomosis. It combines restriction with malabsorption, producing weight loss and metabolic improvement comparable to RYGB with a technically simpler, shorter operation. Dr. Tagore Mohan Grandhi performs the Mini Gastric Bypass laparoscopically. It is particularly effective for patients with Type 2 Diabetes and high BMI, offering significant metabolic benefit with shorter operative time.
How the Procedure Works
Pre-operative Preparation
Full metabolic, nutritional, and psychological assessment. H.pylori testing and treatment before surgery.
Gastric Pouch Formation
A long, narrow gastric pouch created along the lesser curvature of the stomach using a laparoscopic stapler.
Intestinal Measurement
Small intestine measured 200 cm from the ligament of Treitz to determine the anastomosis site.
Single Anastomosis
Gastric pouch connected to the measured small intestine in a single gastrojejunostomy, bypassing the stomach remnant and duodenum.
Post-operative Programme
Liquid diet from day one. Vitamin and mineral monitoring at 3, 6, and 12 months. Lifelong supplementation required.
Outcomes
Who Needs This Treatment?
- →Single anastomosis — simpler with shorter operating time than Roux-en-Y bypass
- →Comparable weight loss and diabetes remission to Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
- →Fully reversible — convertible to RYGB if required in the future
- →Effective for Type 2 Diabetes remission in metabolically high-risk patients
The Mini Gastric Bypass delivers outstanding metabolic results with a reproducible, straightforward procedure. It has become an important option in our bariatric programme.
