What is Laparoscopic Fundoplication?

Laparoscopic fundoplication is the minimally invasive surgical cure for GERD. Through 5 small keyhole incisions, the gastric fundus is wrapped around the lower oesophageal sphincter, permanently restoring the anti-reflux valve and preventing acid reflux into the oesophagus. Dr. Tagore Mohan Grandhi performs laparoscopic fundoplication. Over 90% of patients are free from reflux symptoms and daily medications in the long term, with a hospital stay of just 1–2 days and return to work in 2–3 weeks.

Suitable for patients with chronic GERD failing or requiring long-term PPIs, symptomatic hiatal hernias, and patients preferring a permanent surgical cure over lifelong medication.

How the Procedure Works

1

Pre-operative Workup

Endoscopy grades oesophagitis and assesses hiatal hernia. Manometry determines Nissen vs Toupet wrap type. 24-hour pH confirms pathological reflux.

2

Laparoscopic Access

Five small incisions (5–12 mm). Gastro-oesophageal junction visualised under laparoscopic magnification.

3

Crural Repair

Diaphragmatic crura identified and sutured to reduce the hiatus and repair the associated hiatal hernia.

4

Fundic Wrap

Gastric fundus mobilised by dividing short gastric vessels. Passed posterior to oesophagus — Nissen or Toupet wrap secured with sutures.

5

Recovery

Liquids day one, soft diet for 4–6 weeks. Return to work in 1–2 weeks. Reflux symptoms typically resolve immediately post-operatively.

Who Needs This Treatment?

  • 5 keyhole incisions — significantly less pain than open fundoplication
  • 1–2 day hospital stay versus 3–5 days for open surgery
  • Return to work in 1–2 weeks versus 6–8 weeks after open surgery
  • 90%+ long-term reflux cure — equivalent to open fundoplication
"

Laparoscopic fundoplication gives patients the best of both worlds — permanent reflux cure and rapid recovery. Most stop their acid medications within days of surgery and never look back.
