Open Hernia Repair
Mesh repair of all hernia types — inguinal, femoral, umbilical, incisional, and ventral — open or keyhole approach.
What is Open Hernia Repair?
Hernia repair corrects defects in the abdominal wall or groin through which organs protrude. Mesh reinforcement is the standard of care — reducing recurrence from 5–20% with suture alone to under 1–5% with mesh. The choice between open and laparoscopic repair depends on hernia type, size, and patient factors. Dr. Tagore Mohan Grandhi performs both open and laparoscopic hernia repair for all hernia types — inguinal, femoral, umbilical, incisional, and ventral. Day surgery for most cases with return to light activity in 1 week.
How the Procedure Works
Pre-operative Assessment
Clinical examination confirms hernia type, size, and reducibility. CT for complex, large, or recurrent hernias.
Anaesthesia
GA for laparoscopic repair. Local or spinal anaesthesia for open inguinal repair. Antibiotic prophylaxis given.
Hernia Reduction
Hernia contents reduced into abdomen. Hernia sac identified and assessed for appropriate mesh sizing.
Mesh Placement
Polypropylene mesh placed — preperitoneal for laparoscopic, onlay or sublay for open — and secured with tacks or sutures.
Recovery
Day surgery for most cases. Return to light activity in 1 week. Heavy lifting avoided for 4–6 weeks until mesh integrates.
