What is Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy?

Cholecystectomy is the surgical removal of the gallbladder, performed laparoscopically through 4 small incisions in the vast majority of cases. It is the definitive treatment for symptomatic gallstones, acute cholecystitis, gallbladder polyps 10 mm or above, and early gallbladder cancer. Dr. Tagore Mohan Grandhi performs laparoscopic cholecystectomy using the critical view of safety technique — the internationally recommended standard identifying the cystic duct and artery before division, protecting the bile duct from injury.

Suitable for patients with symptomatic gallstones, acute cholecystitis, gallbladder polyps 10 mm or above, early gallbladder cancer, or as a precautionary measure in patients at high risk of complications.

How the Procedure Works

1

Pre-operative Assessment

Ultrasound and LFTs confirm gallstones. MRCP or EUS if bile duct stones suspected. Antibiotic prophylaxis given.

2

Laparoscopic Access

Four small incisions (5–10 mm). CO₂ pneumoperitoneum established through umbilical port.

3

Critical View of Safety

Hepatocystic triangle carefully dissected until only two structures are seen entering the gallbladder — cystic duct and cystic artery — protecting the bile duct.

4

Gallbladder Removal

Cystic duct and artery clipped and divided. Gallbladder dissected off the liver bed and retrieved in a bag through the umbilical port.

5

Recovery

Day surgery or 1-night admission. Return to work in 1–2 weeks. Low-fat diet for 4–6 weeks while digestion adjusts.

Who Needs This Treatment?

  • 4 small incisions versus a large open wound — significantly less pain
  • Day surgery or 1-night admission versus 3–5 days for open cholecystectomy
  • Critical view of safety technique protects bile duct during every procedure
  • Permanently eliminates the source of gallstones — the gallbladder is removed
"

Cholecystectomy is one of the most successful operations in surgery — over 95% of patients are completely free of symptoms after removing the diseased gallbladder. We use the critical view of safety technique in every case.
