Polypectomy
Endoscopic removal of colon polyps during colonoscopy — the cornerstone of colorectal cancer prevention.
What is Polypectomy?
Polypectomy is the endoscopic removal of polyps from the colon lining during colonoscopy. A snare wire passed through the colonoscope is looped around the polyp and tightened with electrocautery to remove and cauterise it simultaneously. Dr. Tagore Mohan Grandhi performs polypectomy during colonoscopy as a routine procedure. All removed polyps are retrieved and sent for histopathology, and a personalised surveillance interval is assigned based on polyp type and risk.
How the Procedure Works
Polyp Identification
Colonoscope advanced to the caecum and withdrawn carefully. All polyps identified, sized, and assessed by morphology using NBI technology.
Snare Placement
Polypectomy snare passed through the colonoscope working channel and looped around the polyp or its base under direct vision.
Snare Polypectomy
Snare tightened and electrocautery applied, removing the polyp and cauterising its base simultaneously to prevent bleeding.
Polyp Retrieval
Removed polyp retrieved using a net or suction for histopathological analysis in the same session.
Histopathological Analysis
All specimens sent for histopathology. Results guide a personalised surveillance interval — typically 1–5 years.
Outcomes
Who Needs This Treatment?
- →Removes pre-cancerous adenomas before they develop into colorectal cancer
- →Performed during the same colonoscopy — no separate procedure required
- →No incisions, no general anaesthesia, no hospital admission — day procedure
- →95%+ of colorectal cancers are preventable with timely polypectomy
Polypectomy is how we prevent colorectal cancer — not just detect it. Removing an adenoma today eliminates a cancer that would otherwise develop over the next 10–15 years.
