Laparoscopic Ventral Hernia Repair
Keyhole repair of ventral hernias with IPOM mesh — smaller incisions, faster recovery, equivalent recurrence rates.
What is Laparoscopic Ventral Hernia Repair?
Laparoscopic ventral hernia repair uses 3–4 small keyhole incisions to place a large composite mesh intraperitoneally (IPOM — Intraperitoneal Onlay Mesh), covering the hernia defect with adequate overlap. It offers smaller incisions, lower wound infection rates, and faster recovery than open ventral hernia repair. Dr. Tagore Mohan Grandhi performs laparoscopic ventral hernia repair for umbilical, epigastric, and incisional ventral hernias. The mesh is fixed with tacks and sutures, achieving equivalent recurrence rates to open repair through keyhole incisions.
How the Procedure Works
Port Placement
3–4 keyhole incisions placed away from the hernia defect. Laparoscopic ports inserted. CO₂ pneumoperitoneum created.
Adhesiolysis
Any adhesions to the anterior abdominal wall carefully divided under laparoscopic vision to expose the hernia defect fully.
Defect Assessment
Hernia defect measured laparoscopically. Hernia contents reduced. Defect size confirmed to select appropriate mesh size with adequate overlap.
Mesh Placement
Large composite IPOM mesh placed intraperitoneally, covering the defect with minimum 5 cm overlap in all directions. Mesh fixed with transfascial sutures and tacks.
Recovery
Day surgery or 1-night admission. Return to light activity in 1 week. Heavy lifting restricted for 4–6 weeks.
Outcomes
Who Needs This Treatment?
- →3–4 small incisions — significantly lower wound infection rate than open repair
- →Day surgery or 1-night admission — faster recovery than open ventral hernia repair
- →Equivalent recurrence rates to open repair with mesh in experienced hands
- →Suitable for patients with multiple comorbidities at high risk of open wound complications
Laparoscopic ventral hernia repair gives patients equivalent durability to open surgery through keyhole incisions — ideal for patients wanting the fastest recovery and lowest wound complication risk.
